In addition to this recipe,
sauté 1 small carrot in olive oil for 5 minutes to add sweetness
add 1/2 small onion and 1/2 jalapeño pepper to the carrot and cook for an additional 5 minutes
It is up to the chef how he/she wants the sauce. I like to make a “vegetable” sauce that is a little more chunky. You may want a smooth sauce (recipe below.)
I also add 2-3 tbsp raw cacao powder after adding the tomato sauce and water. It gives it a slight chocolatey taste to buffer the chili powder.
